A Cape Town Dream Dwelling: Rocklands 502 by Antoni Associates
Some folks dream of places where streets are paved with gold; this dream apartment, presently under construction in Cape Town, takes some of that glitter and brings it right into the living space, courtesy of a design from Antoni Associates. Step into the living/dining space and you see it immediately: a sliver of gold light, as much sunlight and firelight as illumination — but it’s enhanced by the glow of indirect lighting under the bar, reflecting off contemporary sculptures that provide visual interest and accents to the neutral backgrounds. See how the dining table, with its top of smoky glass, seems to float above the white chairs? By night, the area is skillfully illuminated by unique wall “sconces” that are actually art; a shimmering modern crystal “chandelier” completes the ambience.
From one dining chair you can see straight out to the ocean; ahead is a lounge area leading onto the deck, its open-air living enhanced by a fireplace/fire pit. A square spa hints at the luxury outdoors, visible through clear glass that can be closed when needed. Expanses of glass also can slide aside upstairs, giving the master bedroom the benefit of ample sunshine and fresh ocean breezes; here, too, you have indoor/outdoor transitions made easy with a snow-white lounge chair on a small terrace, bridging the gap. Again, too, there is the gleam of gold: one solid wall in the bathroom glows with subtle light etched through its marbleized surface. Superior luxury with a “Midas touch” above and beyond: that’s this contemporary Cape Town space, almost ready for a lucky owner.
