Combining thoroughly traditional furnishings with all-white backdrops and sleek stainless steel appliances may not sound like harmony — but that’s what happens in this Los Angeles design by Michael Armani Design Studio. In many respects part of a typical apartment building, it nevertheless affords some wonderful amenities, such as tall vertical windows that can let in plenty of light and air. This is a precious commodity in narrow rooms such as the bath; not an inch of space is wasted, while mirrored walls make the space visually larger. More traditional-modern mix abounds: a dignified fireplace on a paneled living room wall, a sumptuously cushioned leather sofa in tones of caramel-chocolate and gray, and an attractive beamed ceiling — albeit in white!
Move to the kitchen — a glorified galley — and what is it you see? A gleaming wood sideboard with volumes of storage space, a lighted shelf, and a definite “country” feel. Simple linoleum is an unobtrusive, easy-clean background, also an invaluable asset in a limited space. A pass-through counter in white and wood grain allows easy serving from the kitchen to the cozy formal dining room, with its electric chandelier and modern table and upholstered chairs. Shining parquet floors tie all the rooms together, with the added luxury of subtly patterned rugs that inject just the right element of color into surroundings that otherwise might appear overly white or sterile. It’s an ideal mix: traditional furnishings, rugs, and “feel” plus clean modern color palettes…for a homey apartment in the heart of the city.
