Climb a bevy of stone steps and you’ll be rewarded by the sight: a colorful interior design and landscaping by Rios Clementi Hale Studios that enhance this new Montecito home, located on a one-acre lot in the Santa Barbara, CA, hills. There’s a reason for the dramatic ascent: as the designers indicate, “A steep ravine cuts off the property to the east, ending in a creek that provided some of the raw materials for the landscape — incredible sandstone boulders that were strategically placed around the site.” You’ll spot many of those boulders right off the bat, surrounded by native plants and grasses around the stairs. The other striking element you’ll see right away in this home is its indoor/outdoor living style.
The designers continue: “All the main living spaces, the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms and halls connect to the outdoors.” Sunbathed terraces welcome you to an outdoor kitchen with shining red al fresco dining table and chairs — and, of course, what would outdoor living be without a pool? The truly seamless nature of the meld of indoors and outdoors is aided by courtyards with distinctive Japanese influences. These courtyards provide transitions between the main sections of the house and are echoed in the color and style of interior elements: a bedroom lantern, a floral pattern on marble in the bathroom. Lastly, there’s a truly practical application of the outdoors to the interior: a kitchen vegetable garden! It’s just one of the features that makes this house, as spacious and contemporary as it is, feel like “home.”
