With one look at this cliff-side property, on the northern beaches of Sydney, you’ll know this is no ordinary pool project — but it’s just the kind that Peter Glass and Associates approach with relish. The site needed to be handled with care; many believed that a pool couldn’t be built at all on the steep incline this site presented. Glass, however, proceeded to construct it at the top of the home’s original driveway. A pastel washed masonry wall provides privacy and shelter from the wind; its geometric “cutouts” are up-lit by night and provide views into, and out of, the pool area. Note the “bench” that runs along one side of the pool: this is an underwater seating area perfect for savoring views of the shoreline, ocean, and horizon beyond.
The pool cabana area, converted from the original garage, holds kitchenette, sauna, and bathing/changing facilities for easy indoors-to-out entertaining. Its travertine finish extends to, and around, the pool and harmonizes beautifully with the pale cream couch cushions and subtle wicker accents. From this area, guests can look upon a pool that seems endless — an infinity edge that melds the Italian glass mosaic blues of pool with ocean and sky. Minimalist in design, the Whale property is “organic” to its setting, intended to complement its surroundings without distraction. Thus, in true Peter Glass fashion, this project has taken a daunting challenge…and rendered it breathtaking.
