Ever imagine that your wedding day could be a goodbye to your home country? It is for the pair pictured in this Montgomery, Alabama, wedding by Stephen DeVries. The emphasis in this celebration is rustic, country, and relaxed. The groomsmen are in gray suiting with light blue ties, while the groom’s tie is white-on-white; the bride wears a strapless white confection, a short veil — and bright blue heels. Her maids are in short pewter-colored satin, while two flower girls are in creamy sage. The “reveal” is casual, cozy, and toasted with Coke — in the bottle. The couple poses in front of a tractor, wanders the fields, says hello to a member of the “horsey set” — literally — and then processes with their party toward the church to prepare for the vows.
A few prayers, a few kisses, and many smiles later, we enter the reception, where sweets are the order of the day: cupcakes, jars of candy, and lollipops. The wedding cake bears bouquets of the same hues as those carried by the maids — cream, pink, and blue — and a young guest is very happy with a Mason jar full of lemonade. Bowing in courtly fashion to the bride, her groom starts the dancing for all, to the accompaniment of mellow string music. Boys and girls of all ages twirl, slide, and do-si-do about the floor; then, the time is right for the bride and groom to escape into their “going-away” outfits and head for their getaway truck. Beneath a shower of sparklers, they drive off in the decorated vehicle, streamers trailing behind, as they say hello to their future…in Germany.
