As designbook.com says, “One look at this symphony of architecture — with immaculate symmetry and a seamless flow of clean straight lines, punctuated only by the panache which the structure itself so brilliantly displays — leaves one in awe…” But it’s a simple formula, really: take one stunning panorama, some excellent modern art, superb finishes, and an innovative modern design that makes the most of soaring spaces, and you have this Joc Blue Hills home by Nico van der Meulen Architects. Its open-plan layout ingeniously blends indoor and outdoor living, something eminently doable in the South African climate. From the glass-lined entrance, two identical staircases lead to upper levels of the home and enable a clever divide between the master suite and the remainder of the home. And what a master suite it is!
With sleeping quarters and spacious bath separated by only a marble wall and fireplace, this gorgeous room opens toward a balcony with a prime view. The home’s palette is pale, a combination of neutrals simultaneously minimalist and warm. Wherever you look, your vision is of space and ambient light, coming through expansive windows and reflecting off an indoor splash pool, for illumination without harshness or glare. And even indoors, there’s a “view” to be had: underwater observation windows enable playful peeking into that indoor pool for yet more fun! Among the many other amenities are a cinema room, a fully equipped bar, and an outdoor pool and terrace that melds with the sumptuous interior. The end result? One unbroken, beautiful whole…thanks to the artistry of van der Meulen.
