Jewel-Like Landscape for a Jewel of a Home: Andrews by Howard Design Studio

Balentine Garden

Take a French-inspired three-story home of stately gables, extended wings, and arched doors and windows, and what comes next? The right garden treatment to complement the dignity of the estate without rendering it stuffy. Such a treatment comes to this Andrews home from Howard Design Studio of Atlanta, GA. Sculptured bushes in round concrete planters flank the front wood-and-glass door, while a bit further away, lavish floral trees are in full white springtime bloom. Symmetry makes this setting work beautifully: matching garden benches sit next to the flowering trees, for enjoyment of both shade and fragrance — surrounded by low-lying ferns that spill over the edge of the stone walk. As you step away from the door, that wide stone walk expands into an open circular “courtyard,” with contrasting pale red brick accenting its center.

This is also a garden of different levels: stone steps leading to multi-paned arched windows bear pots of more ferns and trailing ivy, while at one end of the lawn, another short flight of stone steps leads to a secluded little alcove with a comfy bench and lots of shade, a perfect place for thinking quiet thoughts. Among the pots of white flowers and round bushes, you’ll see vertical interest as well: trees, attached to the brick work, march along the walls with “branches” extended along the full expanse of wall and bordering windows like floating “window boxes.” Some of them even extend above the windows, making neat “caps” of green at the corners of the frames. No matter where you look, the feeling is lush, smooth, and cool — a perfect garden setting for this jewel of a home by Howard Design Studio.
