Whether you’re the house on the block everyone comes to for “the best candy” or you’re a bit off the beaten path, Halloween can be one of the most fun holidays of your year with these creative pumpkin-carving ideas. From pyramids of increasingly-“drunk” pumpkins to complex gargoyles, cartoon characters, or images completely unrelated to Halloween, these photos can start your imagination going — and give you a glowing pumpkin display better than you’ve ever had before. Start with a good solid pumpkin, of course — or several. Then, decide if you’re going to hollow it out, as in the many illuminated examples here (the kissing couple is a cute one), or if you’re doing a solid design that uses the pulp as well (as in the “ogre” examples). Experiment with both to see which you prefer.
Even with a hollow pumpkin, you have room for creativity: kits and stencils can help you create the traditional “black cat,” monster faces, the Grinch, even Harry Potter lettering and images. Good old-fashioned ingenuity plays a part, too — witness the big pumpkins “eating” smaller pumpkins, with appropriate expressions on both! Find two pumpkins fused together? You can create Siamese twins. Got a swashbuckling fan? Buy an eye patch and a kerchief, carve a wide grin on your pumpkin, and slip the knife between his “teeth” for a terrific pirate look. In short — if you can imagine it, you can probably carve it to rave reviews. So stop by the pumpkin patch, sharpen up your knives, do some sketching…and get ready to have some jack o’ lantern fun!
