This relaxed holiday home in Cape Town, designed by Antoni Associates, has a little something “extra”: the “public” level of this dwelling is itself a unique split-level “heart” of the home. For those of you who notice that no matter where your party starts, your guests always end up in the kitchen — this home acknowledges and encourages that with its layout. From the ground level, featuring an infinity pool and lavish outdoor living space, guests can congregate in a living area with plush couch and chair seating, or they can amble up a few steps and be in the friendly kitchen, with its handy eat-in island and four wood stools with inviting curved seats. It’s an ideal mix: enough space and separation for the cook to have ample prep room and still not be isolated from the fun.
The decorating palette here, as in most contemporary designs, is neutral — with a twist. The browns, creams, and sand shades are enlivened by generous use of red. An eye-catching abstract painting in the formal dining area sets that warm tone; the color is echoed in ceramic accents and pillows. Against dove-gray walls, a collection of framed prints sets in counterpoint to the view of the sea and pool through floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in, and vice-versa. Upstairs, the open feeling continues, with a bedroom that faces Camps Bay and which has its own balcony and al fresco table and chairs — a perfect spot for that first morning cup of coffee and glimpse of the sunrise. The designers say Medburn 17 has “a sporty elegance and laid-back coolness.” Truth is, it has all that and more…on many levels.
