The Rick Owens Spring 2014 RTW Collection models were comprised of four U.S. college step teams, the Zetas, Washington Divas, Soul Steppers, and the Momentums. “Step teams are an American phenomenon,” Owens said backstage after the show. “My aesthetic has always been about an American’s interpretation of European glamour. To put these girls on the Parisian runway was a culmination of everything I do.” The intense show started with the models stomping, clapping, slapping, and thumping down an enormous staircase leading to the runway. Rick Owens boldly displayed more diversity on the runway than all the major fashion weeks have ever seen, as the majority of his models were black and not a size 0.

The collection drew inspiration from martial arts and street wear, with a heavy use of leather. Using drapes, layers, hoodies, and a warrior mentality, the sneakers perfectly fit into the lineup. Rick Owens has a business arrangement with Adidas, who were incorporated into the show. The collection also showed a variety of color-blocking and other styling techniques. The runway erupted with a girl power vibe, felt in every corner of the room. This fashion week step show is surely one that the audience will never forget. After a lively step show the models retired from the runway in two separate human chains that eventually became one, representing unity. Owens described this retreat as “a great example of American teamwork”. The Rick Owens Spring 2014 RTW Collection Show rightfully was the highlight of Paris Fashion Week.
