Secluded Green in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs: Coogee by Secret Gardens
When a contemporary home exudes a certain level of class, it’s important that the garden measures up, too; that’s where these NSW homeowners recognized that some professional help from the staff at Secret Gardens might be exactly what they needed. As the designers explain, “Careful plant specification was an integral aspect to this project due to the sloping site, sandy subsoil, and full sun aspect.” In other words, working with an inclined property presented a major challenge, further complicated by a soil that wouldn’t take just any plant well — and the plants needed to be hardy enough to withstand some pretty intense heat. Warm-weather foliage is here, of course: you see the swaying palms in the background of a cozy hedge and lounge chair.
Other examples of hardy plants also add an additional visual interest to the proceedings, like the spiky grass near one entrance. It brings into the mix a glaucous, or pale blue-gray, set of hues that both plays up an expanse of sky and is as cool a vision as the pool. Notice the echoes of blue in the succulents beneath it, as well as in clusters of low floral color surrounding a large ornamental boulder. Indoors and outdoors meld here, too, as witnessed by the interior courtyard adjacent to the kitchen and dining area; just beyond one expanse of glass is a mini-forest of gorgeous green! It’s a smooth mix of indoors and outdoors, a secluded landscape that feels truly tucked away and private…one of the hallmarks of a Secret Garden.
