Even the first glimpse of this home, from its front cobbled drive, is romantic — and that mood continues throughout this renovated French Chateau by Kara Childress. Look at the delicate ivy trailing around the tall windows, uplighted for sheer elegance; then enter the home and be swept away. Even on a misty day, the blue gate beckons you down cobblestones to enter a drawing room graced by a lavish mural on the ceiling, gilt-framed mirror, and magnificent chandelier overhead. A delicate gray chaise in the corner is brightened with a fringed pillow; notice the tassel-trimmed curtains and tiebacks, their muted print a perfect foil for the tall windows. And the sitting room we see before us has, in the past, been much more — filled with couples twirling across its floor, accompanied by violin music.
Everywhere opulence surrounds you: beamed ceilings draw the eye upward, an ornate fireplace draws you for warmth and conversation. A dining table comfortably seats 16, under the light of wall-sconce chandeliers. Shining china and antique crystal await the service of a grand meal; Blue Willow china holds a bouquet of white lilac before an inviting wine rack. While the formal dining room entertains crowds in state, the solarium/breakfast room, all white and windows, lets in the morning light for that first cup of coffee. Everywhere you see the trademark French touches: lace on the curtains, carved chairs at the foot of a bed, curved legs on marble-topped tables. And don’t forget the charm of tea outdoors — or a rendezvous at dusk — by candlelight. Perhaps you’ll stop at the fountain and make a wish…but you also realize it’s hard to wish for more than this magnificent chateau. Stay a while, and savor it.
